PHX Layers

What is PHX Layers?

PHX LAYERS is a friendly locals-only design competition centralized on a theme of live collaboration between designers residing in and representing the Phoenix Metropolitan.

The rules are simple:
Two competitors swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding their own layer as a continuation of the layer before (using only 50px). The final product being a large collaborative image as the sum of all layers. The match lasts a total of 6 rounds where each designer is allowed 30 minutes to complete their layer before returning the file.

This competition challenges the designer not only to be speedy with their craft, but to actively engage creative thinking in order to co-create a flowing piece of art with their opponent.

PHX Layers began in the summer of 2009 as a community booster for Phoenix Design Week. Initially founded by Mark Dudlik, Andrew Coppola joined the team shortly after. Prior to the launch of Season 2 many ideas and concepts were discussed and micro-prototypes were built with the assistance of Jeremy Smith and Sunny Thaper. PHX Layers is currently operated by Andrew Coppola and Mark Dudlik.

The original concept for PHX Layers was a “Locals Only” version of Layer Tennis by Coudal Partners. Midway through our first season, after a suggestion from a role model, we re-looked at the goals of PHX Layers and made a change to the format. We determined that getting our local designers to collaborate was an important part of building a community.

So, collaboration in a competition? Yes, we know it’s a contradiction, but like life we often must collaborate or compete to move forward. We’ve combined them to provide an interesting paradox that must be solved, within a few hours.

We have been happy with the feedback and support gathered over the first season and hope it continues. If you have any comments or suggestions please contact us at info@phxlayers.com
